February 2. In two days, the Super will be played by two teams and watched by over a hundred million Americans. The winning team will receive the Lombardi Trophy, named for coaching legend Vince Lombardi.
On this day in 1959, Lombardi signed a five-year contract to coach the Green Bay Packers. He was a first-time head coach on the professional level, and he quickly turned the Packers from woeful losers into league champions. Lombardi went on to become one of the most successful and oft-quoted coaches in the history of sports. The following is a brief sampling of his wisdom.
“Winning isn’t everything, but wanting to win is.”
”Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.”
”The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.”
”Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all-the-time thing. You don’t do things right once in a while. You do them right all of the time.”
”One big play can win a football game. No one knows when the big play is coming up, therefore every player must go all out on every play.”
